MBS Students Compete in FIDE World School Chess Qualifier

Marian Baker School students at the FIDE World School Chess Championship National Qualifier in Costa Rica

Strategy, focus, and a whole lot of heart were on display this month as students from Marian Baker School competed in the National Qualifier for the FIDE ISCF World School Championship — one of the most respected scholastic chess events in the world. We love seeing our students test themselves against the very best, and this tournament was a proud moment for our whole community.

A national stage for young chess talent

The qualifier brought together students from schools across Costa Rica, all sharing a passion for the game. Over the board, our players showed the kind of patience and problem-solving that takes years to build — reading positions, planning several moves ahead, and staying calm under pressure.

Chess is often called a “mind sport,” and for good reason. Every match asks a student to think critically, manage their emotions, and learn from mistakes in real time. Those are the same skills that serve our students in the classroom and far beyond it.

Representing MBS with excellence and sportsmanship

Win or lose, what stood out most was how our students carried themselves. They represented Marian Baker with excellence, perseverance, and genuine sportsmanship — shaking hands, congratulating opponents, and supporting one another between rounds.

To every participant: congratulations. You challenged yourselves both on and off the board, and you made your MBS family proud.

Where curiosity meets character

Moments like these are what life at our campus is all about. For more than 42 years, Marian Baker School has nurtured curious, confident learners who pursue their interests with purpose — from the chessboard to the science lab to the stage.
