Democracy in Action: Student Elections at MBS

MBS students at the secret-ballot voting station on election day

Today at Marian Baker School, our students did more than cast a vote — they practiced one of the most meaningful acts of citizenship. Student council elections are a hands-on lesson in democracy, and watching our students take that responsibility seriously is one of the quiet joys of life at our American school in Costa Rica.

More than choosing representatives

Student elections aren’t only about picking leaders. They’re about learning the value of having a voice, respecting different opinions, and understanding that every single vote matters.

Through this process, our students experience firsthand what it means to participate in a democracy — something many people around the world are still fighting for the right to do.

A privilege and a responsibility

Voting is a privilege, a responsibility, and a powerful way to shape the future. By practicing it now — in a safe, supportive environment — our students are growing into thoughtful, informed, and engaged citizens for tomorrow.

They debated ideas, listened to one another, and made their choices with care. That’s exactly the kind of character formation we hope to nurture every day.

Educating citizens for tomorrow

For more than 42 years, Marian Baker School has believed that a great education shapes both the mind and the character. Moments like these — full of respect, enthusiasm, and purpose — are why we’re so proud of our community.
