Life at MBS

Life Beyond the Classroom at MBS

Academics build the foundation, but character grows on the field, on stage, and in student-led initiatives. From AASCA tournaments to drama productions, from Model United Nations to the Parent Association, life at Marian Baker School is where Wildcats become leaders, teammates, and lifelong friends.

Athletics – More Than the Game

At MBS, athletics teach the lessons no classroom can: discipline, teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship. Whether competing across Central America in AASCA or representing MBS in local tournaments, our Wildcats learn that effort and sportsmanship matter as much as the score.

AASCA – Interscholastic Travel Teams

Marian Baker School is a member of the Association of American Schools of Central America (AASCA), competing against American schools across the region in:

  • Basketball — Boys & Girls
  • Volleyball — Boys & Girls
  • Sportsmanship — recognizing fair play and team spirit across every tournament

Our Wildcats travel, host, and represent MBS at AASCA tournaments throughout the year.

Featured: AASCA tournament schedules are confirmed approximately one week before each event by the host school. Follow our Instagram for live updates.

Intramural & Local Tournaments

Beyond AASCA, MBS competes in tournaments that connect us to the broader Costa Rican school community:

  • ACTION Tournament
  • Torneo del Este
  • Juegos Deportivos Estudiantiles MEP

Sports by Level

  • Elementary: Sports clubs introduce younger Wildcats to teamwork and fundamentals in a fun, low-pressure environment.
  • Middle School & High School: Students may try out for the competitive Basketball and Volleyball teams that represent MBS in AASCA and local play.

Arts – Where Wildcats Find Their Voice

The arts at MBS develop expression, confidence, and creative thinking. From first improv exercises in Elementary School to full-stage productions in High School, every Wildcat finds a place to create.

Drama & Theater

Drama at MBS combines technique, collaboration, and live performance. Students develop voice, presence, and storytelling craft — and bring it all to the stage in our annual MBS Drama Play.

Music

Music classes introduce students to instruments, vocal technique, and ensemble performance, culminating in our annual Music & Art Festival.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts students explore drawing, painting, mixed media, and design — building portfolios that travel with them long after graduation.

Annual Events

  • MBS Drama Play — one or two productions per year (recent: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)
  • Music & Art Festival — annual showcase of student work across disciplines

Wildcat Life – Student-Led Leadership

Some of the most lasting lessons at MBS happen outside the classroom: in student government meetings, in late-night MUN debates, in honor society service projects. These are the spaces where Wildcats lead.

Student Council (StuCo)

Middle School & High School

Student Council is a group of student leaders who represent the voice of their peers, working to improve the school community, support student initiatives, and foster leadership, responsibility, and collaboration.

How members are elected: Each year, students form political parties and run full electoral campaigns. The new student government is elected at the end of May and beginning of June.

Signature activities:

  • Bake Sales
  • Easter Egg Hunt
  • Pep Rally
  • Spirit Week
  • School Spirit Activities
