Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Your trust matters to us. Marian Baker School ("MBS," "we," "us," or "our") is an American school in Costa Rica, and we take the privacy of our families, students, and visitors seriously. This policy explains, in plain language, what personal information we collect through our website (mbs.ed.cr), how we use it, and the choices and rights you have

Information We Collect

We only collect the information we need to respond to you, process an application, or improve our website. Here’s what we collect and how.

Information you give us through forms

When you fill out a form on our site, we collect what you choose to share:

  • Contact form: your name, email address, phone number (optional), and the message you send us.
  • Admissions / Apply form: information about your family and your prospective student, which may include the student’s name, age or grade level, current school, and other details relevant to the admissions process.

Information when you schedule a campus visit

We use Calendly to let you book a tour. When you schedule, Calendly collects your name, email, and phone number and shares it with our admissions team ([email protected]) so we can confirm your visit.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, our site automatically collects limited technical data when you browse — such as your IP address, browser type, pages viewed, and how you arrived at our site. This comes mainly from cookies and analytics tools (see Section 4).

Section 3: How We Use Your Information

How We Use Your Information

We use the information you provide to:

  • Respond to your questions and inquiries.
  • Process and follow up on admissions applications and campus-visit requests.
  • Send you information you’ve asked for, or — only if you’ve opted in — occasional updates about MBS news, events, and admissions.
  • Maintain and improve our website and understand how visitors use it.
  • Meet our administrative, safety, and legal obligations as a school.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising purposes.

Section 4: Cookies & Analytics

Cookies & Analytics

Cookies are small files stored on your device that help websites work and remember preferences. Our site uses cookies and third-party tools for the following:

  • Google Analytics — helps us understand site traffic and usage (e.g., pages visited, approximate location via IP, device type). This data is used in aggregate to improve the site.
  • Google Translate — lets visitors view the site in Spanish or other languages. Using it may send page content to Google for translation.
  • Google Fonts — loads the typefaces used across the site, which may involve a request to Google’s servers.
  • Instagram feed — our homepage embeds our Instagram feed, which may set cookies or collect data per Instagram’s (Meta’s) own policies.

You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings. Disabling some cookies may affect how parts of the site work.

Section 5: Third-Party Services

Third-Party Services

Some functions of our site rely on trusted third-party providers, each governed by its own privacy policy:

  • Google (Analytics, Translate, Fonts)
  • Calendly (campus-visit scheduling)
  • Meta / Instagram (embedded social feed)
  • SiteGround (website hosting)
  • Email delivery (we send email through an SMTP service to reliably deliver our messages to you)

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these providers to understand how they handle data. We share information with them only as needed to provide these services.

Section 6: Children’s Privacy

Children’s Privacy

Because we are a school, some of the information we receive concerns minors — for example, details about a prospective student submitted during the admissions process.

  • Information about a child should be submitted by a parent or legal guardian, who consents to MBS using that information for admissions and related school purposes.
  • We treat children’s information with extra care and limit its use to the purpose for which it was provided.
  • Our website is intended for use by parents, guardians, and prospective families — not for direct use by young children.

If you believe a child’s information has been shared with us without proper consent, please contact us (Section 11) and we will address it promptly.

Section 7: Data Retention

Data Retention

We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, or as required to meet our legal and administrative obligations as a school. When information is no longer needed, we take reasonable steps to delete or anonymize it. You may also ask us to delete your information (see Section 8).

Section 8: Your Rights

Your Rights

Under Costa Rica’s data-protection law — Ley N.º 8968, “Protección de la Persona frente al Tratamiento de sus Datos Personales,” overseen by the agency PRODHAB — you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Rectify (correct) information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Delete your information, where there is no legal reason for us to keep it.
  • Withdraw consent at any time for uses based on your consent (such as marketing updates).

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 11. We will respond within the timeframes set by applicable law.

Section 9: Data Security

Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against loss, misuse, and unauthorized access — including secure hosting and limiting access to staff who need it. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we work to safeguard your data and to respond responsibly if an issue ever arises.

Section 10: Changes to This Policy

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. When we do, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.

Section 11: Contact Us

This Privacy Policy is effective as of June 21st, 2026 and was last updated on June 21st, 2026.
